As well as this, the protagonist Randle McMurphy (Mac) is a man who likes to bet a lot as well as eager to make relationships with people, many times for his own benefit. Many times he is attempted to be subdued by various methods to make him less "dangerous" with only the final attempt working with the removal of part of his brain. His death at the end is somewhat of a mercy killing by The Chief; this was perhaps done in order to preserve the memory of Mac and the 'run to freedom' at the end of the film is the fulfilment of Mac's wishes in order to be free and break the constant cycle; Mac is also able to do by breaking the bonds that shackle him to the Earth and to be free in death.

When first seeing this movie it became an instant favourite and to this day will defend my argument that it is best movie that has ever been made. It is the best casted movie that i have ever seen with everyone playing their roles so well and each actor comes away stealing the scene. The movie is genuinely funny with real human humour played throughout. It shows the harsh time of a mechanically run mental hospital which is interrupted by the social reality of RP McMurphy. The movie leaves you pondering on one question, Is RP McMurphy crazy or normal? The harsh reality of it is, that we today can't clearly define between the both so can't make a real judgement. Nicholsons performance is undoubtedly the best of his career and deserves a standing ovation every time it is seen. So if you have never seen this movie, rent/buy it kick back and let it bring you through (not to use a cliché - but really makes sense in this instance) a roller-coaster of emotions as you fall in love with this film as you laugh until you cry and cry until you smile.
